+ THE OTHERS + TRUTH / MAY 1

VOID's second birthday celebrations happen on Friday May 1st with a huge double header. After 30 events and hosting some 20+ international artists, VOID is putting on one hell of a party to celebrate. Direct from London we have THE OTHERS who are part of Caspa’s Dub Police label and part of the Tempa and FWD stable of artists. DJ Dextrous represents THE OTHERS for this debut Australian tour. Expect straight skankin Dubstep from this chap with all the fresh new beats from all the big producers in the game. Straight up London sounds from this boy!

In support we host TRUTH from New Zealand. With an amazing release on Mala’s Deep Medi label a few months back and forthcoming releases on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz, Sydney’s own Aquatic Lab and various other imprints around the globe, this trio is blowing up internationally. We grab a couple of them just before they embark on a worldwide tour.

To host the night we have well London grime LOGICAL MC. Part of the well known grime crew Macabre Unit. The local lineup is cracker too. Mark Pritchard playing under his guise of HARMONIC 313 is back from his European tour. GARAGE PRESSURE always on song with all the freshest tunes and forthcoming material on the established Aquatic Lab. Void’s own VICTIM is there also as is the deep styling on the one they call SABA. Upstairs in Spectrum we change up the vibe with the Ro Sham Bo boys MORIARTY and SLEATER BROCKMAN, as well as On the Fly’s THA FIZZ and KATO bringing everything from Grime to Garage, Baltimore to Bassline house. Hijack sound takes over Spectrum to expect bass pressure to be heaving up there all night long.

DeXterous and D-Code, hailing from North West and West London respectively, met at the world famous Vestax DJ Academy at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, where they instantly clicked due to their musical tastes. D-Code came from a Dark Garage, Jungle and Drum & Bass background whilst DeXterous followed Dubstep from its roots of UK Garage.

After getting in the studio to produce their first track together (Killer Bees, October 2005), it was later picked up by DJ Wonder who gave it huge support on London’s leading pirate radio station Rinse FM and at events such as the legendary FWD. After the success of their first track they decided to pursue their productions together and made some more material, which began to attract notice from some of the scenes most respected artists as they started to shape and mould their own unique sound.

In July 2006 The Others were approached by Boka Records and were signed up for their first release: ‘Hear Dis Style’ and ‘Underworld’ – which received glowing reviews in various publications with DJ mag calling The Others “Burgeoning beat masters for sure!”
After more work in the studio with tracks championed by the likes of N-Type, Caspa & Rusko, Joe Nice (USA) and Hatcha, on radio stations such as Kiss 100, BBC 1Xtra, Rinse FM, Sub FM and at events such as FWD in Shoreditch, Sub Dub in Leeds and the mighty DMZ in Brixton. They were then signed up to Dub Police with a 3 track EP: Africa, Flapjack Dub & Bushido – released in March 2007, which was highly successful and extended their fan base. After hearing Caspa playing ‘Freakshow’ at FWD, Youngsta then contacted The Others to sign it to the legendary Tempa, sharing wax with the likes of Benga, Rusko & Martyn to make up Vol.4 of the Tempa Allstars series. Fast forward to 2008 with a string of successful releases (including fan favorite ‘Funhouse’ on Dub Police) and appearances on popular mix compilations ‘Dubstep Allstars Vol.5’ mixed by N-type and ‘Fabric Live 37” mixed by Caspa & Rusko also forthcoming releases on Dub Police, Boka, Veri Lo and other highly respected dubstep labels, as well as appearances at events across the globe and airplay from Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1 – The Others show no signs of slowing down!

TRUTH (Deep Medi / Disfigured Dubs / Aquatic Lab )

Truth, undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s greatest Dubstep exports; have been making a huge impact around the world with their heavy bassline riddims. An encounter with dubstep visionary Mala (Digital Mystikz) inspired the New Zealand trio to try their hand at a new sound. The result was blinding, a style that defies categorization; encompassing an array of melodies, vocals and spacious beats that range from half-step stompers to the deeper profound realms of sound; all with one common element which underpins every track; a heavy bassline riddim that lays sheer force on any system heavy enough to handle it.

Truth’s big riddims have been quickly snatched up by a number of established labels including Mala’s seminal ‘Deep Medi Musik’ with the huge 12”, (The Fatman / Stolen Children), Skream has picked up a Truth 12” featuring (Stay / The Future) for his label ‘Disfigured Dubs’. Australian Aquatic Lab has just signed two 12" vinyl releases along with a track for their album. Z Audio have signed a Truth 12” (Bubba ho step / Business Man), Dubting have signed the 12" (Wednesday / Ghetto Slug) and a 12” forthcoming on the very exciting and label to watch ‘Optimus Gryme Recordings’ (Payback / Optimus Gryme- Immortal- Truth remix).

Truth’s huge dubplates has been receiving vast DJ support from around the globe with artists including; Mala, Skream, Benga, Mary Anne Hobbs, Hijack, Joe Nice, Emalkay, DMZ & Goth Trad to name a few with their beats being dropped at shows from venues as far away as Club Love in New York City to DMZ in London, from Double Happy in Christchurch to Sonar in Spain, as well as featuring on Radio shows including the world’s number one, ‘Rinse FM’. Truth are extremely talented DJ’s, holding down one of New Zealand’s biggest international and nation event companies. They have been honing their skills for years alongside the worlds best, as well as mixes for radio shows and podcasts, each receiving huge accolades from the lucky listeners, you can be sure their set will be a set to remember.
