+ INDEX feat KODE 9 / JUNE 26

PRESS RELEASE

If the club INDEX hasn’t been turning heads already since it kicked of in early March, the June edition is set to make everyone take notice of what’s been happening monthly at the Civic Underground. In conjunction with Red Bull Music Academy and 3D World, Void presents the mighty KODE 9. This man is without a doubt one of the hottest properties in electronic music and his appearance both at INDEX and the Red Bull Music Academy Info Session on Friday 26th of June will no doubt be one of the biggest nights on Sydney’s music calendar for 2009.

Philosopher, producer, artist, dj, mentor, label boss - there's not much that the notorious Kode9 hasn't done for electronic dub styles. His genre-stepping Hyperdub label has shaped many a career, most notable for 'discovering' Mercury Music Prize nominee, "Burial", and drawing some of the biggest names in Dubstep such as "Joker", "Zomby" and "The Bug". His own Kode 9 productions are just as uncompromising, known for delving into the deepest, heaviest sounds found at the edges of what's expected.

Kode9’s hyperdub sound is difficult to define, sometimes with beats, sometimes without, sometimes with a vocalist, sometimes without – the only continuity is the heavy sub bass. Currently, kode9’s dj sets travel through a selection of off-key synth driven beats and hyperactive, percussive uk house, dubstep and grime.

Kode9 is based in South London and runs the record label Hyperdub (releasing artists such as Burial, The Bug, Joker, Ikonika, Darkstar, Zomby, LV, LD, Samiyam). He hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on pioneering London pirate radio station Rinse Fm between 2003 and 2007 and is one of the rotating djs at the seminal dubstep nights DMZ and Forward>> in London. He has released tracks on Soul Jazz, Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label, dubstep label Tempa and his own Hyperdub imprint and has remixed Burial, The Junior Boys, Dabrye & MF Doom, Lee Scratch Perry and The Bug. His dj sets have helped spread the South London sound internationally, from Europe to South America, from North America to Asia and Australia. In 2006 he mixed the Dubstep Allstars Vol.3 CD compilation on Tempa records, and released the album ‘Memories of the Future’ with vocalist Spaceape. Kode9 has appeared at most of Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder events in Europe and North America as well as at leading international festivals such as Sonar(Spain), Mutek(Canada), Coachella(USA) and Bestival(UK). His recent single 'Black Sun' was released early in 2009 and will be followed by a new album with Spaceape later this year.

2009 is the 5th anniversary of Hyperdub label and will be marked by a special 2 CD compilation album featuring new tracks from most of the artists who have released on the label in addition to a few of Kode9's favourite producers. The album will be released in the second half of 2009.

To support Kode9 on the huge night we have crafted a unique lineup aimed at taking you across the broadest possible spectrum of electronic music. Mark Pritchard needs no introduction, you know to expect the freshest beats from this man. Lorna Clarkson and Sofie Loizou representing Red Bull Music Academy are known for their diverse and unique take on Dj’ing and pulling out lost treasures in their rich musical background. Likewise, Victim is always representing the oldschool, expect some classic breakbeat mixed up with the glitchiest Dubstep and Grime around. To round off, Aquatic Lab boss - Farj, is known for some of the biggest dancefloor tunes in Dubstep, expect a big set from this man. Complimenting this fine array of artists is the stunning vocalist Steve Spacek.

To make this night even bigger, be sure to join Kode 9 on the couch for a Q&A session about his take on music, production, Hyperdub and the Red Bull Music Academy. Free for all those creative music heads (artists, producers, dj's, musicians) who would like to learn more about the Academy and how to apply.
