One of Bloodyfist’s early signings was none other than Hedonist, a man known for his unique and rare selection of jungle, expect the unexpected from this chap. MARK N

Mark N is one of the under-appreciated renegade figures in Australian electronic music. Immensely hard-working and driven, he has more notoriety overseas than locally, having toured extensively through North America and Europe first with his now defunct trio Nasenbluten, and later solo as Overcast and as a fierce DJ. Growing up and running things from Newcastle, a city two hours drive north of Sydney once famous for its now-closed steel works, he has enormous pride in his roots. His "take no shit" attitude and deadpan, self-deprecating humour have been responsible (together with Aaron Lubinski and Dave Melo) for Nasenbluten's noisy, grating and harsh music, which has been released on labels all over the world, including Industrial Strength. Becoming frustrated with putting music out on other people's labels, Mark set up Bloody Fist Records - a name that still gets him strange cold calls from telemarketers. Bloody Fist steadfastly refused to release music from anyone outside of the Newcastle region. His later solo productions as Overcast are for the most part dark, menacing relentless drum n bass, but also explore cut ups and other tempos, whilst his highly technical DJs skills, including wins at the DMC and ITF championships, have irritated many in the local hip hop community who see him, rightly, as an outsider and a threat. Original Nasenbluten records trade for ridiculous figures on eBay, and every release from his Bloody Fist label is a collectable. Mark ceremonially closed down Bloody Fist on its 10th anniversary and moved interstate. He vows to return to Newcastle to retire, and when he does maybe the Newcastle mayor will present him with the keys to the city.

BIZ (E)

The year was 1984 when Herbie Hancock unleashed the phat electro rhythms of “rockit”.For a selected few this was the first taste of breakdance culture and the art of the dj cutting and scratching.To14 year old Biz E this represented the conception of his future passion, and the start of his obsession with black music.Since then Biz has seen the evolution of dance culture from the slamming beats of hip hop,to the psyhadelic grunge of acid house. He has experienced the vibe of the first Horden dance parties, when clubs like “spagos”were in their prime. The first raves held in low ceiling wharehouse oozing with sweat, the only lighting being a single strobe. All these experiences have shaped his Dj style-a style which incorporates all things funky from the fast cutting of hiphop, the smoothness of chicago house, the building rush of acid music,to the rawness of the funk, that bottom heavy groove that you just can’t resist. When Biz E is in the mix he is constantly working, self indulgent to the point of being unique yet always watching the crowd, using his experience to know just what to do next to keep the floor rocking. Since the start of his dj career Biz E has played at hundreds of parties, here is a few that deserve a mention:

Children of The Vortex / these included Vortex(91),Aztec(92),Ecology(93),Eon(94)
Tribal parties
Virtual Bass and totem / these included Ov Thee Earth Tribe(94),Carnival Ov thee Mind(95)
Freakin parties (96-97)

As a party promoter Biz E’s efforts included:
Mental(91 “the first Sydney rave to have an all Australian dj line up”)
Escape(92)
Dreamscape(93)
Morph(95)
Octophuzz(95 NYE Balmain church)
Blue Apple Phunk(96 Balmain Fair)

OZI BATLA

Ozi is one of Australia's best known MCs, fronting both The Herd and Astronomy Class. In 1996, Ozi Batla teamed up DJ ALF, and hosted the Joined at the Bass nights at the Cricketer's Arms in Surry Hills. From there, he and ALF went on form the band Trace Element with current Herd bassist Rok Poshtya. They played a multitude of gigs, including the unforgettable Reclaim the Streets parties of the late 90s. In 2000, Ozi and ALF were part of the DnB weekly Sonic Fiction, which lasted 36 consecutive weeks. Frigid, the legendary sunday-nighter, was also host to many of Batla's shows. In 2001, The Herd began to evolve out of the fledgling independent label Elefant Traks, with which Ozi has been recording artist since it's inception in 1998. Live shows began to reveal the raw elements of the group's debut release. 2002 saw Ozi earn his "battler" tag, completing in a swag of MC battles and taking a number of titles, including Verbal Mechanics NSW champ, NSW Stealth Battle champ, semi-finalist in Melbourne's Revolver MC Battle, placing in the Battle for Supremacy invitational and was a grand finalist in the National Stealth Battle.

RITUAL and ALF

Both Ritual and Alf started playing out in the mid 90's. Ritual started playing in the beginning of 1996. Well known gigs with Green n' Jazzy were a night of everything from funk, to downtempo and DnB. Early influences in broken beat, detroit techno, hip hop, funk, beats, dub and reggae and artists like 4 Hero, Bugz In The Attic and also Dread Garage with Horsepower and Darqwan. He then championed the Drum and Bass sound from there on following the likes of Bukem, Full Cycle, MIST and Calibre up to his own productions with Jungle Expeditions and Conscious Rebel Music. Alf first hooked up with Ozi Batla to rollout some hip hop and jungle biznezz sometime in the mid 90s at the Cricketers Arms. He co-promoted and was resident DJ for legendary Sonic Fiction nights in a grimey club called Frontier... Later on a new concept called Airbourne was formed to showcase to a wider audience of Drum'n'bass and Beatz lovers. He has collaborated with Gerry 23break; Ritual; Prince V; Sulo; Munk; Jase Foreign Dub; P_O Foreign Dub; Urthboy; Ozi Batla; Dave Edwards; Murda1; Vice Versa; Semper Fi; and supported the likes of Blackalicious, Michael Franti, Squarepusher, Photek, Hermitude, Concord Dawn, Hilltophoods, DJ Hype, Roni Size and several more..

BEN WALTON

Ben Walton started Djing in Sydney in the mid 90's & has since played in New Zealand, California & throughout Europe. Although predominantly a underground house DJ over the years, his roots were in the warehouse/rave scene & he quickly became an avid collector of early 90's breakbeat & jungle sounds which were a dominant force in the UK at the time. Spending many hours getting tune id's off his favourite mix tapes & digging through countless crates overseas he has built up a quality collection to be reckoned with.“ I decided to focus on collecting wax purely from '92 & in particular '93 as that was really the first year of jungle, it had started to break away from it's hardcore roots but still had a very raw, underground rave orientated feel to it & was often quite dark with plenty of energy “In 2003 he threw a party called 'Stepback' dedicated to these sounds & we look forward once again to another set of his jungletekno mayhem !

THE CLEANER

A member of the Jungle Massive Australia collective in the mid 90’s, The Cleaner is known for his trademark style of hardcore breakbeat and jungle. Coming up in the steel city of Newcastle with the likes of Syndicate, Mark N and Hedonist, the Cleaner took his heavyweight sounds to Sydney to become a regular in the jungle scene.

VICTIM

DJ Victim’s first exposure to electronic music was in the Sydney rave scene in the early 90’s. After hearing early music from Congo Natty, Altern8, Remarc and many others he was initially drawn to early Breakbeat and Jungle Techno and began following labels such as Suburban Base, Reinforced, Congo Natty, Kemet, Production House and various other Jungle imprints of that time. Upon further discovery he discovered music of a similar vein produced locally by the likes of Syndicate, Nasenbluten and Embolism. This interest in Breakbeat music eventually lead to a keen following of the Breakcore sound in the late 90’s which fused many elements he found appealing in early breakbeat and jungle into the one sound.
