A gnarled defender of dark bass and nasty beats, DJ Distance is one of the best producers of Dubstep and Breaks emerging from the UK underground. Rinse FM selecta, Distance's productions toil amidst bracing basslines, fluid percussion, rock, metal, hip-hop, and breaks. After releases on the cream of the underground imprints such as Planet Mu, Tectonic, Boka, Ringo,Hotflush and Destructive, the south Londoner's new label Chestplate is designed to showcase his freshest, most venue-quaking new material. The first release is 'Radical' as featured on the scene-leading Dubstep Allstars compilations. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the dubstep sound as we know it today. With Chestplate, he intends to showcase the freshest of his own productions which have been devastating dances and flooring radio listeners over the recent months. The two tracks featured on the release have been firm favorites in his live sets and on his Rinse FM show, garnering major support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Hatcha, Pinch, Chef and Cyrus along the way. 'Battle Sequence' sees Distance exercising his darker side. It is a metallic stomper with lethally programmed precision percussion, full of low-end gnarl and stray feedback squeals. On the flip, 'Feel Me' reflects Distance's lighter side. With a suggestive female vocal sample and motorik drum patterns, the track skips along amidst ring modulated synths and subtle low slung, pulsating bass."

Distance's debut album My Demons released to critical acclaim, following a dark cinematic path taking heavy metal and twisted industrial textures en route. As Distance puts it right at the beginning of his debut album, "I like the street--the smells, the scents of another world." The grim, otherworldly atmosphere of My Demons is accomplished with only a handful of ingredients, but little about it feels remotely "minimal." This is sturdy, full-bodied music, especially when Distance lets a little light flicker through the fog. The title track features a twinkling, looped synth motif over a gurgling, high-pitched bass line--think New Order's Peter Hook amplified through an industrial fan--and very crisp percussion, in particular a ricocheting conga that provides the track's hook as much as the keyboard does. In addition to glowering, massive bass, the "dub" in "dubstep" generally applies to the application of echoing reverb. Distance uses both judiciously and well. His use of reverb turns a sketch like "Tuning" into something more haunting and resonant, and provides the snaking, distorted 303 bass lines of "Night Vision" and especially "Confined"--on which Distance's synth tweaks evoke heavy metal guitars--a clear space in which to roam, scuttle, and zoom.
