2008 / DECEMBER / JOKER

VOID turns things up a notch for the summer with one of the hottest new producers in the Dubstep & Grime scene – JOKER.

Aged just 19, Joker is an immensely precocious talent, he burst onto the Dubstep and Grime scenes in 2008 with the vibrant 'Grimey Princess' and 'Gully Brook Lane' which were released on Earwax and Plastician's Terrorhythm imprint respectively. His productions possess a rare duality in that they are both instantly identifiable yet impossible to classify. His musical peers include Rustie, Gemmy and Kode 9, the Hyperdub label boss and recognised tastemaker, identified Joker as one to watch when he named him as his protoge for Mary Anne Hobbs' hugely seminal follow-up to Dubstep Wars, Generation Bass which was broadcast worldwide on BBC Radio 1. Joker and Nomad's video can be viewed on Youtube and in testament to the level of interest in this Bristolian talent, continues to be the highest viewed video of the Maida Vale session.

His productions are battered by DJs including Appleblim, Pinch, Plastician and Rustie, he's recently been named Pitchfork's Producer Of The Year and Kapsize002, his latest release on his own imprint sold out in 2 days. Although born to Grime and adopted by Dubstep, Joker refuses to be tagged and his soul drenched productions have been described as Jehri Curl Boogie and Wiley stuck in an elevator with Cameo. Whatever you call it, as we move into the unknown of 2009, Joker is one of the shining stars that can be seen in the distance.

"2008 Producer of The Year' PITCHFORK
"Joker is Bristol's biggest new guy on road" NME
"Everyone's going loopy for Joker" FACT
"Immediate Impact" PLAN B

Joker is supported by a diverse group of DJs all heavily involved in pushing these sounds within Australia. Mark Pritchard really needs no introduction, a massive international reputation as Harmonic 313 and countless releases on the illustrious Warp imprint. Garage Pressure are the first true soldiers in the scene and the first to start an Australian Dubstep label - Aquatic Lab. Prize, part of the Space is the Place crew and responsible for bringing us Flying Lotus and Gas Lamp Killer. Bec Paton also needs no introduction as one of the founders of Headroom and the eagerly anticipated Hudson Mowhawke show. Same O is arguably Melbourne's best Dubstep DJ and we can't wait for him to bring his styles to Sydney, and finally Victim, one of the main guys behind VOID, bringing you this business each and every month. All of this is hosted by the distinctive vocal styling of Steve Spacek.
